What should you know about a hepatic panel blood test?

Short answer

A hepatic panel blood test measures liver-related enzymes, proteins and bilirubin to help assess liver health.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Sample
Usually a small blood sample from a vein
Purpose
Checks several liver-related markers together
Interpretation
The pattern matters more than one value

What the results can mean

The panel may include alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase, which can rise when liver cells are irritated or injured. Alkaline phosphatase and bilirubin can provide clues about bile flow, while albumin and other proteins reflect aspects of the liver's production work. A result outside the laboratory range does not identify one condition by itself. Medicines, alcohol, recent illness, muscle injury and other health problems can influence individual values.

Clinicians read the pattern, the degree of change and your symptoms together. They may compare the result with earlier tests or request repeat blood work, imaging or another assessment. Liver-related abnormalities can occur alongside conditions such as coeliac disease or glandular fever, so context matters.

How to prepare and follow up

Follow the laboratory's instructions about fasting, medicines and the appointment time. Do not stop a prescribed medicine unless the clinician who prescribed it tells you to. Bring a list of medicines, supplements and recent illnesses, and mention alcohol use honestly because it can affect interpretation. After testing, arrange the recommended follow-up so the clinician can explain the pattern rather than focusing on one flagged value.

When to seek care promptly

Seek urgent medical advice for yellowing of the skin or eyes with confusion, severe weakness, repeated vomiting, marked abdominal swelling, bleeding, or difficulty staying awake. Contact a clinician soon about new dark urine, pale stools, persistent nausea or pain under the right ribs, especially if these symptoms are worsening.

Useful questions for your doctor

Ask which values were tested, which results were outside the expected range, whether a medicine or recent illness could explain them, and when repeat testing or imaging is appropriate.
