Recovering after hepatectomy

Tiredness, reduced appetite, abdominal discomfort and changes in bowel activity are common early concerns after major abdominal surgery. Nurses encourage breathing exercises, sitting up and walking as soon as it is safe. Blood tests help the team follow liver function, blood count and clotting.

The pace of recovery varies with the amount removed, the surgical approach, liver health and other treatments. The final pathology report confirms what was removed and may guide treatment for liver cancer, bowel cancer or liver metastases.

Take pain medicine as prescribed, keep the incision clean and dry as instructed, and increase walking in small steps. Avoid lifting or strenuous exercise until the surgeon gives permission. Eat regular nourishing meals and drink as advised; tell the team if nausea or poor appetite prevents this.

Seek urgent advice for fever, rapidly worsening pain, persistent vomiting, yellow skin or eyes, confusion, faintness, heavy bleeding, breathlessness, chest pain or a wound that becomes increasingly red, swollen or wet. Report a swollen abdomen or inability to keep fluids down without delay.

Ask when you may shower, drive, work and lift; which symptoms are expected; when the pathology result will be discussed; and how liver function will be checked. Clarify who to call outside clinic hours and how future cancer treatment will be coordinated.
