What should you know about hemorrhagic olecranon bursitis?

The olecranon bursa sits between the skin and the pointed back of the elbow. Leaning on the elbow, repeated contact, or a blow can irritate the sac and cause bleeding. The swelling may feel soft or tense and elbow pain can increase when the area is touched or the arm is bent. A clinician checks the skin, movement, injury history, and general symptoms because blood, infection, gout, and other conditions can look similar.

Keep weight off the elbow and pause activities that involve leaning, crawling, or repeated impact. Use a cloth-wrapped cold pack briefly and keep the arm in a comfortable position. Do not puncture or squeeze the lump. A clinician may recommend anti-inflammatory medication if it fits your health history. Joint aspiration can sometimes remove fluid or help clarify the diagnosis, while bursa removal is reserved for selected persistent or recurrent cases after assessment.

Seek prompt assessment after a forceful injury, rapid enlargement, marked loss of elbow movement, or repeated bleeding. Get urgent help if the elbow becomes hot and increasingly red, drainage appears, fever develops, pain becomes severe, or you feel unwell. Tell the clinician about blood-thinning medicines, easy bruising, diabetes, or a recent wound near the elbow.
