Brain metastases are cancer deposits that have travelled from another part of the body. Bleeding inside or around one can irritate brain tissue and raise pressure in the skull. Lung cancer, melanoma, and breast cancer are among cancers that may spread to the brain, but imaging and pathology are needed to identify the source.

Doctors may use urgent brain imaging to assess bleeding, swelling, and the number, size, and location of lesions. The treatment plan depends on neurological symptoms, bleeding, overall health, cancer activity elsewhere, and medicines that affect clotting.

Follow the neuro-oncology team’s instructions and report any change from your usual function. Keep an accurate medicine list, including anticoagulants and supplements, and never change these without specialist advice. Ask whether you need help with walking, driving, work, or daily tasks while symptoms are being assessed.

Possible treatments include medicines to reduce swelling, focused stereotactic radiosurgery, whole-brain radiotherapy, surgery, or treatment directed at the original cancer. The team balances bleeding risk, symptom relief, and control of disease.

Call emergency services for a sudden severe headache, new weakness or numbness, seizure, repeated vomiting, fainting, confusion, trouble speaking, loss of balance, or a sudden change in vision or alertness. Do not drive yourself. If a seizure occurs, protect the person from injury, do not restrain them, and place them on their side when safe.
