Short answer

Hemi-hysterectomy is an informal term that may describe removal of part of the womb or a one-sided uterine operation, so confirm the exact procedure, organs involved, and fertility effects with your surgeon.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Clarifying the operation

A hysterectomy removes the uterus, or womb. The cervix, fallopian tubes, and ovaries may or may not be removed, depending on the reason and the planned operation. “Hemi-hysterectomy” can be used loosely, so the wording on your consent form matters more than the nickname.

Operations involving the womb may be considered for fibroids, adenomyosis, endometriosis, endometrial hyperplasia, heavy periods, pelvic pain, or some cancers. Removing the womb ends the ability to carry a pregnancy. Removing the ovaries is a separate decision that can affect hormone levels and menopause symptoms.

Before and after surgery

Ask the surgeon to draw or name exactly what will be removed and how the operation will be performed. Discuss alternatives, fertility goals, ovarian conservation, expected recovery, and whether tissue will be examined by a laboratory. Follow instructions about medicines, eating, bathing, activity, and wound care.

After surgery, gentle movement may help recovery, but follow your team’s limits on lifting, driving, sex, and work. Keep the follow-up appointment so the operative findings and any tissue results can be explained clearly.

When to contact the surgical team

Seek urgent advice for heavy vaginal bleeding, worsening abdominal pain, fever, faintness, chest pain, difficulty breathing, a painful swollen leg, or redness and discharge from an incision. Passing urine becomes urgent if you cannot empty your bladder or develop severe burning with fever.

Questions to take to your appointment

What exactly does hemi-hysterectomy mean in my case? Will the cervix, tubes, or ovaries remain? Could this affect fertility or hormones? What alternatives fit my diagnosis? Which symptoms after surgery should prompt a call or emergency review?

Questions people ask

Does hemi-hysterectomy always remove an ovary?

No. The ovaries are separate from the uterus, and whether they remain depends on the medical reason, findings, age, and surgical plan.

Can I still have periods after a hysterectomy?

If the uterus is removed, menstrual periods stop. Hormone changes depend mainly on whether the ovaries are also removed or continue functioning.
