HEINE 3000 otoscope: what patients should know

The clinician gently positions the instrument at the ear opening and views the canal and eardrum through its viewing head. This can help identify wax, irritation, swelling, discharge, a foreign object, or changes behind the eardrum. The device supports an examination; it does not independently name the problem or replace the history and physical assessment.

The clinician may examine both ears and compare what is visible with pain, fever, hearing changes, congestion, or balance symptoms.

Tell the clinician when symptoms began, whether they affect one or both ears, and whether there has been discharge, injury, swimming, or an attempt to remove wax. Keep still while the device is near the ear, particularly during a child’s examination. Do not insert cotton buds, hairpins, or other objects into the canal. Arrange medical review for persistent ear pain, reduced hearing, repeated discharge, or symptoms that do not settle. Seek urgent advice after a significant ear injury, sudden hearing loss, severe dizziness, or swelling and redness behind the ear. A clinician can decide whether the ear needs cleaning, treatment, monitoring, or further assessment.

Ask what the examination showed, whether wax blocked the view, whether both eardrums looked similar, and which symptoms should prompt a return visit. You can also ask whether hearing testing or another examination is needed.
