Short answer

A HEINE 3000 otoscope is a handheld examination device that lets a clinician inspect the ear canal and eardrum using light and magnification.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the examination shows

The clinician gently positions the instrument at the ear opening and views the canal and eardrum through its viewing head. This can help identify wax, irritation, swelling, discharge, a foreign object, or changes behind the eardrum. The device supports an examination; it does not independently name the problem or replace the history and physical assessment.

An ear check may be part of a [GP Consultation](/treatments/consultations-and-assessment/gp-consultation/) or a [Child Health Consultation](/treatments/consultations-and-assessment/child-health-consultation/). The clinician may examine both ears and compare what is visible with pain, fever, hearing changes, congestion, or balance symptoms.

How to prepare

Tell the clinician when symptoms began, whether they affect one or both ears, and whether there has been discharge, injury, swimming, or an attempt to remove wax. Keep still while the device is near the ear, particularly during a child’s examination. Do not insert cotton buds, hairpins, or other objects into the canal. To understand the wider examination, see [Otoscope](/technology/otoscope/).

When to seek care

Arrange medical review for persistent ear pain, reduced hearing, repeated discharge, or symptoms that do not settle. Seek urgent advice after a significant ear injury, sudden hearing loss, severe dizziness, or swelling and redness behind the ear. A clinician can decide whether the ear needs cleaning, treatment, monitoring, or further assessment.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what the examination showed, whether wax blocked the view, whether both eardrums looked similar, and which symptoms should prompt a return visit. You can also ask whether hearing testing or another examination is needed.

Questions people ask

Does the otoscope diagnose an ear infection by itself?

No. It provides a view that the clinician interprets with symptoms and other findings.

Can an otoscope examination hurt?

It is usually brief, but a tender or inflamed ear may feel uncomfortable. Tell the clinician if it hurts.
