What should you know about a heel stress fracture X-ray?

Short answer
A heel stress fracture X-ray can help identify bone changes, but an early fracture may not be visible and needs clinical review.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the image can show
A stress fracture is a small crack or area of bone overload that can develop after repeated impact or a sudden increase in activity. An X-ray may show a visible line, healing response, or other change, but a normal early image does not always settle the question. Your clinician combines the scan with the location of tenderness, activity history, swelling, and how you walk. Pain may be felt in the heel or elsewhere in the foot and leg, so the examination guides the next step.
Until the diagnosis is clear
Pause running, jumping, and other impact activity while awaiting advice. Do not repeatedly test the heel by walking through sharp pain. Use the support, footwear, or temporary reduction in weight-bearing recommended by your clinician. If bone health is a concern, discuss vitamin D deficiency and whether vitamin D supplementation is appropriate; do not start high-dose supplements without medical guidance. A repeat assessment or different imaging test may be considered when symptoms and the first X-ray do not match.
When care is urgent
Seek prompt medical care if you cannot bear weight, pain is rapidly worsening, swelling is marked, or the foot becomes numb, pale, or cold. Arrange review for persistent heel pain after a change in training or workload, especially when walking causes limping. Early protection can prevent a small bone injury from becoming more extensive.
Questions to ask
Could my X-ray miss an early stress fracture? Should I limit weight-bearing while symptoms continue? What would make further imaging useful? Do my symptoms suggest a bone-health issue?

Questions people ask
Can an X-ray rule out a heel stress fracture?
Not always, particularly when symptoms are recent. The examination and follow-up plan remain important.
Should I keep exercising before the X-ray review?
Avoid painful impact activity and ask the clinician reviewing you how much weight-bearing is appropriate.
