Heavy period on Nexplanon: what to know

Nexplanon releases etonogestrel, a progestogen that prevents pregnancy and can alter the lining of the uterus. Some users have lighter bleeding, while others notice spotting, unpredictable bleeding, or heavier and longer episodes. The pattern may change over time and does not show whether the implant is working by itself.

Bleeding may also have another explanation, including pregnancy, infection, a uterine condition, or a medicine interaction. A clinician can review the insertion date, other symptoms, pregnancy possibility, and the pattern before suggesting a plan.

Track bleeding days, flow, clots, pain, bleeding after sex, and any missed or interacting medicines. Arrange a contraception or gynaecology review if bleeding is heavy, persistent, disruptive, or different from your usual pattern. Do not try to remove the implant or change medicines yourself. Treatment options may include observation, a prescribed short course of medicine, or discussing another method such as a hormonal coil.

Get urgent help if bleeding rapidly soaks protection, you feel faint or very weak, have severe pelvic pain, fever, shortness of breath, or could be pregnant. Seek prompt review for redness, swelling, increasing pain, or discharge at the implant site.

Ask whether the pattern fits the implant, whether pregnancy or another cause should be checked, and which treatment options suit your health history. Ask how a hormonal coil compares with the implant if you want a different bleeding pattern.
