Heavy period and cramps: what to know

Cramps happen as the uterus contracts, but unusually strong or worsening pain can point to a condition affecting the uterus. Uterine Fibroids may cause heavy flow, pressure, or painful periods. Adenomyosis can make periods heavier and more painful. Endometrial Polyps, endometrial hyperplasia, hormonal changes, and perimenopause may change bleeding without producing the same pain pattern. Heavy bleeding can leave you tired or breathless if Iron Deficiency Anaemia develops.

Note the location and character of pain, whether it begins before bleeding, and whether pain occurs between periods or during sex. Also record flow changes and any fever, vomiting, or unusual discharge.

Use warmth on the lower abdomen if it is comfortable, rest, and keep a record of symptoms. Ask a pharmacist or clinician which pain medicine is suitable for you, particularly if you have stomach, kidney, bleeding, or pregnancy concerns. A clinician may consider an examination, blood tests, or imaging based on your history.
