What should you know about heavy period after smear test?

A smear test gently collects cells from the cervix, which can bleed slightly when touched. Bleeding that is heavy, lasts beyond the expected recovery, or happens repeatedly may have another explanation, such as cervical inflammation, a hormonal change, or a problem unrelated to the test. Bleeding after a smear test does not diagnose cervical cancer, and the result of the test is interpreted separately from the bleeding.

Use a pad if needed so you can observe the amount and colour, and note when the bleeding started. Follow any instructions from the screening clinic. Contact the clinic or your usual healthcare professional if flow is heavier than spotting, continues, or is accompanied by pelvic pain, discharge, or fever. Tell them about pregnancy possibility, medicines that affect bleeding, and recent procedures.

Get urgent help for rapidly worsening bleeding, faintness, severe pelvic pain, fever, or feeling very unwell. Arrange a clinical review for bleeding after sex, bleeding between periods, or bleeding after menopause. A clinician may examine the cervix and decide whether a colposcopy, HPV test, or other assessment is appropriate.
