Heavy period after Lupron injection: what to know

Lupron changes signals between the brain and ovaries. Around the start of treatment, that shift can temporarily alter the uterine lining and cause bleeding or spotting before suppression becomes steadier. The pattern also depends on why Lupron was prescribed and whether fibroids, adenomyosis, polyps, or another condition was already affecting your periods.

Note how often you change pads or tampons, whether clots are present, how long the bleeding lasts, and whether you feel dizzy, weak, short of breath, or unusually tired. Repeated heavy bleeding can contribute to iron deficiency anaemia.

Contact the clinician who prescribed Lupron and give the injection date, dose if known, bleeding pattern, pain level, and any medicines you take. Do not change the injection schedule or add hormonal treatment without guidance. Keep hydrated, rest when needed, and use period products that let you judge the amount of bleeding. A clinician may review your examination, blood count, iron status, or need for further testing.

Seek urgent medical help if bleeding is rapidly soaking through pads, you feel faint or confused, have severe or worsening pelvic pain, develop chest pain or breathlessness, or cannot keep fluids down. Prompt review is also appropriate when heavy bleeding continues, returns after settling, or is accompanied by fever or foul-smelling discharge.
