What should you know about heavy nasal congestion?

Short answer
Heavy nasal congestion is often caused by swelling from a cold, allergy or sinus problem, but persistent or severe blockage needs assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

- Persistent, recurrent or one-sided blockage
What heavy congestion can mean
Congestion happens when the lining inside the nose becomes swollen or produces extra mucus. A Common Cold may cause a blocked or runny nose with throat irritation, while Allergic Rhinitis often brings sneezing, itching and watery eyes. Sinusitis can add facial pressure, reduced smell or thick nasal discharge. Repeated exposure to house dust mites may keep symptoms going. Night-time blockage, loud snoring or pauses in breathing can also warrant discussion of Obstructive Sleep Apnoea.
One-sided blockage, nosebleeds, a reduced sense of smell that does not recover, or symptoms lasting beyond an expected infection should be checked rather than managed indefinitely at home.
What you can do now
Drink fluids, rest, and use saline spray or a saline rinse to loosen mucus; use sterile or previously boiled and cooled water for a rinse. Keep smoke, strong fragrances and known allergens away from the room. Raising your head slightly during sleep may make breathing easier.
A pharmacist can explain whether Allergy Medication or another short-term option suits you. Follow the label, check interactions with your regular medicines and avoid using decongestant nasal sprays for longer than advised, because overuse can worsen blockage.
When to seek care
Seek urgent help if congestion comes with severe breathing difficulty, swelling of the face or throat, confusion, a severe headache, stiff neck, or changes in vision. Arrange a medical review for high fever, marked facial pain, repeated episodes, symptoms after an injury, or blockage that is persistent or mainly on one side.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what is causing the swelling, whether your symptoms fit allergy or sinus disease, which treatments are safe with your health conditions, and whether persistent one-sided blockage needs an examination.
