Heavy flow during a period: what to know

Short answer
Heavy flow during a period is worth discussing when it disrupts life, lasts beyond your usual pattern, or causes pain, fatigue, or dizziness.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

- Timing, protection changes, clots and symptoms
- Watch
- Dizziness, breathlessness and unusual fatigue
Possible explanations
Heavy menstrual bleeding can reflect changes in ovulation or hormones. Uterine fibroids, adenomyosis, endometrial polyps, and endometrial hyperplasia can also affect how the lining grows or how the uterus contracts. Polycystic ovary syndrome and perimenopause may make bleeding less predictable. Heavy flow is a presentation of several conditions; it does not show which condition is present.
Losing more blood than usual may reduce iron stores. Notice tiredness, headaches, reduced concentration, breathlessness, or paleness, and mention them at an appointment.
How to prepare for care
Keep a simple record of start and finish dates, the heaviest days, changes of protection, clots, pain, and missed work or activities. Bring a list of medicines and contraception. A clinician may consider an examination, blood tests, and imaging based on your symptoms and reproductive plans. Treatment choices can include medicines or procedures, so discuss benefits, side effects, and fertility goals.
Warning signs
Seek urgent care if bleeding is rapidly soaking protection, you feel faint, have chest discomfort or shortness of breath, or have severe pain. Arrange a prompt review for bleeding between periods, bleeding after sex, bleeding after menopause, or symptoms of anaemia.
Useful questions
Ask what may be causing the pattern, whether you need a blood count or iron test, and whether an ultrasound is appropriate. Ask which treatment fits your pain, bleeding goals, contraception needs, and plans for pregnancy.

Questions people ask
How do I describe heavy period flow?
Describe how often you change protection, whether bleeding leaks through, the size or frequency of clots, and how the flow affects sleep or activities.
Can heavy periods cause low iron?
Repeated heavy bleeding can lower iron stores and may cause fatigue, headaches, paleness, or breathlessness, so testing may be useful.
