What should you know about heavy flakes on scalp?

Dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis can produce loose white or yellowish scale, sometimes with itch or an oily scalp. Scalp psoriasis may create thicker, well-defined plaques that extend beyond the hairline. Scalp ringworm can cause scale with broken hairs, tender areas, or patches of hair loss and needs medical treatment. Product buildup and a dry, irritated scalp can also shed flakes. The appearance, location, itch, redness, and hair changes help a clinician separate these possibilities.

Flaking is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Notice whether it began after a new product, affects the eyebrows or ears too, or is spreading.

Wash the scalp regularly with a gentle product and avoid scratching or forcefully lifting scale. If a clinician or pharmacist recommends a medicated shampoo, follow its directions and allow the lather to contact the scalp as instructed.
