Heavier period after miscarriage: what should you know?

After a miscarriage, the uterus and menstrual cycle need time to return to their previous pattern. The first period may be heavier, more painful or longer than usual, and later cycles may also be irregular for a while. Bleeding after the miscarriage itself is not necessarily a period, so timing can be difficult to judge. Ongoing pregnancy tissue, a new pregnancy or another gynaecological cause can also produce bleeding, which is why the pattern and associated symptoms matter.

Record when bleeding starts, how it compares with your usual period, pain, clots and any dizziness. Rest, drink fluids and use menstrual products that let you observe the flow. Arrange a review if bleeding remains unusually heavy, cycles do not settle, or pregnancy symptoms continue.
