Heat spots on the neck: what should you know?

Small red or skin-coloured bumps may appear where sweat, hair, collars, scarves, or hair products irritate the skin. Folliculitis can form around hairs and may feel tender or contain pus. Acne can produce blocked pores, whiteheads, or deeper sore bumps; the neck can also be affected by hormonal acne. Shaving may cause razor bumps along the beard area. A clinician can distinguish these from rosacea or perioral dermatitis by examining the pattern, itch, scale, and timing.

Move to a cooler environment, rinse sweat away with lukewarm water, and pat the neck dry. Wear a loose, breathable collar and pause fragranced products, oily hair products, and close shaving until the skin settles. Do not squeeze or scrub the bumps. Keep a note of heat, exercise, new products, shaving, and whether the spots itch or hurt. Arrange medical advice if the area is rapidly worsening, very painful, hot, draining pus, or leaving marks, or if it does not improve after cooling and avoiding irritation. Seek urgent help for fever, facial swelling, trouble breathing, or a rash that spreads quickly. A neck rash after a new medicine also needs prompt assessment.
