Heat Lumps on the Neck: What They May Mean and What to Do

The phrase may describe a lump that becomes noticeable during hot weather, sweating, or a feeling of warmth. A clinician will need to determine whether it is a swollen lymph node, a skin or soft-tissue change, a thyroid-related swelling, or another type of neck mass.

Lymph nodes in the neck can enlarge while the immune system responds to an infection in the throat, mouth, teeth, ears, or nearby skin. Some lumps arise from the thyroid or other tissues. A neck lump can also be a presentation of head and neck cancer, lymphoma, thyroid cancer, or cancer of unknown primary, but the lump itself does not establish any of these diagnoses.

Notice when the lump began, whether it changes in size, whether it is tender, and whether the skin is red or hot. Record associated symptoms such as hoarseness, difficulty swallowing, sore throat, fever, night sweating, or unexplained weight loss. These details help guide the examination.

Arrange a medical assessment for a new neck lump that does not settle, returns, or is growing. The clinician may examine your mouth, throat, neck, lymph nodes, and thyroid, then decide whether imaging, blood tests, or a sample of the lump is appropriate.

Do not squeeze, repeatedly press, or try to drain the lump. Bring a list of medicines and describe recent infections, dental problems, skin irritation, smoking or alcohol exposure, and any previous cancer treatment. Seek urgent medical help if the swelling makes breathing or swallowing difficult, rapidly increases, or is accompanied by marked weakness, confusion, or a severe allergic reaction. Prompt assessment is also appropriate for a firm or fixed lump, persistent hoarseness, bleeding from the mouth, or repeated drenching night sweats.
