Heartburn during miscarriage

Heartburn is burning behind the breastbone or a sour taste caused by stomach contents moving upward. Hormone changes, stress, altered eating patterns, medicines, and lying down can all make it more noticeable. It is not a typical way to judge pregnancy tissue, bleeding, or recovery. Miscarriage symptoms vary, and the diagnosis may need an examination, pregnancy hormone testing, or a transvaginal ultrasound.

If you are unsure whether a miscarriage has been confirmed, contact your maternity or gynaecology service. Tell them about bleeding, cramps, pain location, fever, and how you feel overall rather than relying on heartburn as a marker.

Eat small, gentle meals and stay upright after eating. Sip fluids, avoid foods that clearly worsen burning, and rest in a position that feels comfortable. Do not start an over-the-counter medicine without checking with a clinician or pharmacist, especially while pregnancy tissue may remain or if you have other medicines. Follow the plan given for monitoring, medical treatment, or a procedure.

Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding, severe or one-sided abdominal pain, fainting, marked weakness, fever, chills, foul-smelling discharge, or shoulder-tip pain. Emergency help is also needed for chest pressure, breathlessness, vomiting blood, or black stools. These symptoms need assessment regardless of whether heartburn is present.
