What should you know about heartburn and dark urine?
Heartburn and dark urine may be unrelated, but dark urine with dehydration or jaundice needs prompt medical assessment. Urine can become darker after sweating, vomiting, diarrhoea, or not drinking enough. Brown or tea-coloured urine, pale stools, yellow skin, or yellow eyes can point to a liver or bile problem rather than reflux.
What this combination may mean
Heartburn commonly reflects irritation from stomach contents moving into the food pipe. Dark urine may occur with concentrated urine, heat exhaustion, blood or muscle breakdown, or liver inflammation such as hepatitis A or hepatitis B. These conditions can present with dark urine; dark urine alone does not identify the cause. Ask about recent heat exposure, reduced fluids, new medicines, alcohol, travel, sick contacts, abdominal pain, fever, nausea, and changes in stool colour.
What to do next
If you feel well and the urine became darker after fluid loss, take frequent drinks and check whether it returns toward its usual colour. Do not stop prescribed medicines without advice, and avoid alcohol until the cause is clearer. Keep a note of urine colour, fluid intake, heartburn triggers, and associated symptoms. Persistent or unexplained dark urine warrants a clinical review and may require urine and blood tests.
When to seek care
Seek same-day care for dark urine with yellow eyes or skin, severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, fever, confusion, marked weakness, or very little urine. Emergency help is needed for fainting, inability to keep fluids down, severe dehydration, or rapidly worsening illness. People with liver disease, pregnancy, or significant medical conditions should seek advice promptly rather than waiting for the colour to change.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the colour suggests concentrated urine, blood, or bile; which medicines and tests should be reviewed; whether liver testing is needed; and which heartburn treatment is suitable while the urine change is being assessed.
