Heartburn and acid reflux medicine: what to know

Some products neutralise acid for short-term relief, while others reduce acid production and are used for recurring symptoms. The product label, timing, and duration matter. A pharmacist can check for interactions, including with medicines you already take, and help choose a suitable option.

Follow the label and do not combine several reflux products unless a clinician or pharmacist advises it. Eat smaller portions, avoid lying down soon after meals, and identify foods that trigger symptoms. Keep a note of when symptoms occur and what you used. Recurring night symptoms may disturb sleep; discuss them rather than repeatedly self-treating. Get urgent help for crushing or severe chest pain, breathlessness, fainting, sweating, or pain spreading to the arm or jaw.
