What is a heart-shaped uterus called?

A bicornuate uterus has a pronounced dip at the upper part, so the uterine cavity may look like two rounded sides. It forms before birth and is different from a normal variation in the outer contour alone. Many people have no symptoms; others discover it during fertility or pregnancy imaging. The name describes anatomy, not a diagnosis of cancer or a prediction about fertility.

Ask which imaging finding led to the label and whether another uterine shape, such as a septate uterus, needs to be excluded. Ultrasound may provide the first view, while pelvic MRI can clarify the outer and inner anatomy in selected situations. Keep a record of relevant pregnancy history and ask how the finding affects any planned monitoring. Treatment is not automatically needed.

The name itself is not an emergency. Seek prompt medical care for severe pelvic pain, heavy bleeding, fainting, fever, or pregnancy-related bleeding or fluid leakage. Outside pregnancy, arrange review for persistent pain, unusual bleeding, or difficulty becoming pregnant so other causes can be considered.

Ask whether the finding is definitely bicornuate, what was seen on imaging, and whether pelvic MRI would help. Discuss any implications for conception, pregnancy monitoring, and symptoms that should trigger contact.
