Heart-shaped uterus and miscarriage

A bicornuate uterus develops with a dip at the top, creating two upper cavities that join into one lower cavity. Some people have no symptoms and learn about the shape during an ultrasound or pregnancy assessment. Pregnancy outcomes vary; the finding alone cannot predict what will happen in an individual pregnancy. A miscarriage has many possible causes, and self-blame is not appropriate.

Share any previous pregnancy losses, preterm birth, bleeding, or pelvic procedures with your obstetric team. They may confirm the anatomy with targeted imaging, and a pelvic MRI can sometimes clarify the uterine shape when ultrasound is not enough. Keep scheduled appointments so the pregnancy, cervix, and fetal growth can be assessed when clinically indicated. Do not start treatment or restrict activity without advice.

In pregnancy, seek urgent assessment for heavy vaginal bleeding, severe or one-sided abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, fever, or fluid leakage. These symptoms need evaluation regardless of whether a bicornuate uterus has been diagnosed. If you are worried after a previous loss, contact your maternity team promptly for an individual plan.

Ask whether the diagnosis is confirmed, whether the shape affects the cervix or pregnancy cavity, and which scans or reviews are planned. Discuss warning symptoms, emotional support after loss, and whether a pelvic MRI would add useful information.
