Heart failure EKG: what it can tell you

An EKG, also called an ECG, uses sticky sensors on the chest and limbs to record electrical signals. It takes only a short time and does not send electricity into the body. The tracing may show an irregular rhythm such as atrial fibrillation, a fast or slow rate, conduction changes, or patterns that suggest earlier damage. A normal tracing does not rule out heart failure, because electrical activity is different from the heart’s pumping function. An echocardiogram is often needed to view structure and movement.

Wear clothing that can be adjusted to place the sensors and avoid applying oily lotion to the skin beforehand. Tell the clinician about medicines, implanted devices, and symptoms such as palpitations, fatigue, cough, or ankle swelling. Breathe normally and remain still while the recording is made. Ask how the result relates to your blood pressure, examination, blood tests, and any scan already planned.

Call emergency services for severe breathing difficulty, fainting, chest pressure, sudden weakness, or a sustained very fast or irregular heartbeat with dizziness. Arrange prompt medical review if breathlessness, cough, fatigue, or swelling is steadily worsening. Do not wait for a routine EKG appointment when symptoms are severe or sudden.

Ask whether the tracing shows a rhythm or conduction problem, whether you need an echocardiogram, and how soon the result should be discussed. Clarify which symptoms warrant urgent help and whether any current medicine can affect the heart rate or rhythm.
