Heart failure and renal failure

The kidneys need steady blood flow to remove waste and regulate salt and water. If the heart pumps less effectively, kidney filtration may fall. If the kidneys retain salt and water, extra fluid increases the workload on the heart and may cause swelling or breathing symptoms. This two-way interaction is sometimes called cardiorenal involvement, but the exact cause of a change needs assessment.

Clinicians commonly follow kidney blood tests, urine findings, blood pressure, potassium and symptoms alongside heart function. A change can occur during an illness, after dehydration, or following a medicine adjustment, so a single result is interpreted in context rather than in isolation.

Keep appointments for blood and urine monitoring, and take medicines exactly as prescribed. Tell your clinician about vomiting, diarrhoea, fever, poor intake, new over-the-counter pain medicines or herbal products. These details can change kidney function and may alter a safe treatment plan.

Track the symptoms your care team has asked you to watch, such as ankle swelling, cough, fatigue, palpitations or changes in breathing. Do not deliberately increase or restrict fluids, or change a diuretic, without specific advice because the right balance differs between people.

Get emergency help for severe breathlessness, chest pressure, fainting, new confusion, blue lips or inability to stay awake. Contact a clinician promptly if urine becomes much less frequent, swelling rises quickly, you cannot keep fluids or medicines down, or you become unusually weak. Rapid changes can reflect fluid imbalance or reduced kidney function and need timely review.

Ask what your kidney results show, which symptoms suggest too much or too little fluid, and when monitoring should be repeated. Check which painkillers and supplements to avoid, what to do during vomiting or diarrhoea, and who to contact if your weight, swelling or urine output changes.
