What should you know about a healthy PET scan?

A PET scan shows areas where a small amount of injected tracer is being used or collected by tissues; a CT scan adds information about structure and location. Healthy tissues can show activity, and inflammation or infection can also alter the pattern. A quiet or reassuring scan lowers concern for an active process that the test can detect, but it cannot prove that every illness is absent. The report may mention areas that need comparison with earlier imaging.

Ask the clinician who ordered the scan to explain each finding and how it fits the reason for testing. Follow preparation instructions before future scans, including advice about eating, drinking and medicines. If the scan was arranged to find where a cancer began, additional imaging or tissue sampling may still be considered. Some lymphomas and cancers of unknown primary can require several sources of information before a diagnosis or treatment plan is made.

A scan result is not a substitute for urgent assessment. Seek immediate help for severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, collapse, new confusion, a seizure or rapidly worsening weakness. Contact your care team if unexplained weight change, persistent pain, fever or a growing lump continues after a reassuring scan.

Ask what the tracer pattern showed, whether any finding needs another scan, and whether your symptoms require examination or a biopsy. Clarify when the report will be reviewed again and which changes should prompt an earlier appointment.
