How can you help a stye heal faster?

A stye is a blocked, inflamed eyelid gland that forms a painful spot near the lashes or within the lid. Warmth softens secretions and can support natural drainage; it does not make it safe to pierce the lump. Mild redness, tenderness, swelling, and a small amount of crusting can occur.

If redness spreads across the eyelid or cheek, the problem may be more extensive than a local stye. Eye Discharge or marked Red Eye can also signal another eye condition, so the whole eye and vision should be considered.

Wash your hands before touching the eye. Hold a clean, comfortably warm cloth over the closed lid and re-warm it as needed. Repeat the routine through the day, then wipe away loosened crusts gently with clean water. Use a fresh cloth and do not share towels.

Leave the lump alone between compresses. Stop contact lenses and eye cosmetics until the eye is comfortable and clear, and replace eye makeup used during the episode. Recurrent styes deserve assessment for eyelid irritation or gland dysfunction rather than repeated squeezing.

Book a GP Consultation if the stye is not improving, keeps returning, or interferes with vision. Seek urgent help for severe pain, sudden vision change, fever with spreading facial swelling, pain when moving the eye, or swelling that makes the eye difficult to open.

Ask whether the lump needs treatment, how to clean the eyelid safely, and whether repeated episodes suggest another condition. Explain when it began, whether discharge or vision change is present, and whether you wear contact lenses or use eye cosmetics.
