How to improve stretch marks

Stretch marks are lines or bands that develop when skin stretches or changes faster than its supporting structure can adapt. They may begin red, purple, or darker than surrounding skin and later become lighter or silvery. They can occur during growth, pregnancy, weight change, or muscle gain, and they are not a sign that the skin is dirty or poorly cared for.

Use a plain moisturiser if the area feels dry or itchy, but understand that moisturising does not rebuild the deeper change on its own. A dermatologist can assess whether the marks are newer or older and discuss options such as microneedling, RF microneedling, fractional laser treatment, or carboxytherapy. Choice depends on skin tone, location, timing, pregnancy status, and whether colour or texture is the main concern. Several appointments may be needed, with healing time between them.

Book an assessment if stretch-like marks appear suddenly without an obvious skin change, become broad and painful, or occur alongside easy bruising, weakness, or other new symptoms. Ask for advice before using prescription creams during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
