Short answer

Headache with light and sound sensitivity can occur with migraine, illness, dehydration, or heat exposure and deserves attention to its pattern and warning signs.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What this combination can mean

Migraine commonly includes sensitivity to light and sound, and may also bring nausea, vomiting, or a need to rest in a quiet, dim room. The pain can be throbbing or pressing and may affect one or both sides of the head. A viral illness can cause headache alongside fever, tiredness, cough, sore throat, or body aches; COVID-19 and the common cold are examples of illnesses that can do this. Nasal blockage or facial pressure can occur with allergic rhinitis or chronic sinusitis. Dehydration and heat exhaustion can add headache, thirst, dizziness, weakness, or reduced urination.

The combination does not identify one cause by itself. Note when it began, how quickly it developed, whether it follows poor sleep, missed meals, heat, screens, or a familiar migraine pattern, and which other symptoms occur.

What you can do now

Move to a cool, quiet, dimly lit place and reduce screen brightness or loud noise. Sip fluids; if you have been sweating or vomiting, ask a pharmacist whether an oral rehydration drink is suitable. Eat a light meal if you have missed food, and rest without driving if vision or concentration is affected.

If you normally use an over-the-counter pain reliever safely, follow its package directions and avoid taking more than recommended. Record the medicine, timing, possible triggers, and response. Repeated headaches, a new pattern, or frequent reliance on pain medicine merits a clinician review.

When to seek care

Seek emergency help for a sudden, extremely severe headache; new weakness, numbness, confusion, fainting, trouble speaking, or a seizure; a stiff neck with fever; repeated vomiting with inability to keep fluids down; or a headache after a significant head injury. Get urgent assessment for severe headache with high fever, a new rash, severe eye pain, or vision loss.

Arrange medical advice soon if the headache is new and persistent, keeps returning, is steadily changing, or feels unlike your usual headaches. Heat exposure with worsening dizziness, confusion, collapse, or inability to drink also needs urgent care.

Questions for your doctor

Could this pattern fit migraine or another cause? Which symptoms would change the urgency? Is my current pain medicine appropriate, and how often can I use it? Should I keep a headache diary or have an examination or further tests?

Questions people ask

Does light sensitivity always mean migraine?

No. Migraine commonly includes light sensitivity, but illness, dehydration, heat exposure, and other problems can also cause it.

Should I stay in a dark room?

A quiet, dim room may reduce discomfort for a short time, but seek care if symptoms are severe, unusual, persistent, or accompanied by warning signs.
