Headache while drinking: what to know

Alcohol can widen blood vessels, disturb sleep and increase fluid loss, all of which may contribute to head pain. Drinking quickly, drinking in heat, not eating or mixing alcohol with medicines can make symptoms harder to interpret. A headache that starts while drinking is not automatically a hangover and is not proof that alcohol is the cause. Migraine, infection, sinus congestion or another condition may happen at the same time. If you drink non-alcoholic fluids or have a specific beverage trigger, record that detail for a clinician.

Stop drinking alcohol, move somewhere cool and sip water or an oral rehydration drink if you are awake and can swallow safely. Eat a light meal if appropriate, rest and do not drive. Avoid taking medicines while intoxicated without checking for interactions; several common products can be unsafe with alcohol or liver disease. If symptoms recur with small amounts, discuss the pattern with a clinician rather than testing it repeatedly. Keep note of the drink, timing, amount in plain terms, food, medicines and other symptoms.

Call emergency services for difficulty waking, slow or irregular breathing, seizure, confusion, collapse, repeated vomiting, a sudden explosive headache, weakness, trouble speaking, vision loss or a head injury. Do not leave a severely intoxicated person alone. Seek prompt care for persistent vomiting, inability to drink, severe dizziness or worsening headache. Heat Exhaustion can accompany drinking in hot conditions and may need urgent assessment.
