What should you know about headache that moves around?

Pain may shift as tight muscles in the neck, scalp, jaw, or shoulders become more active. Migraine pain can also change sides or spread, sometimes with nausea, light sensitivity, sound sensitivity, or visual symptoms. A blocked or irritated nose may cause pressure around the forehead, cheeks, or eyes; see Allergic Rhinitis, Chronic Sinusitis, or Common Cold for related patterns. Fever, sweating, vomiting, poor fluid intake, hot surroundings, or prolonged exertion can point toward dehydration or heat exhaustion. COVID-19 and dengue fever can also cause headache with other illness symptoms. Generalised Anxiety Disorder may be associated with sustained muscle tension, but a moving headache does not identify one diagnosis by itself.

Rest in a cool, quiet place and drink fluids regularly if you can keep them down. Eat if you have missed meals, reduce bright screens, and gently relax your jaw, shoulders, and neck. Record when the pain starts, where it travels, its severity, triggers, associated symptoms, medicines taken, and whether it improves. Use only pain medicine that is suitable for you and follow its label; repeated frequent use can itself contribute to headaches. Avoid strenuous activity if heat, fever, dizziness, or weakness is present.

Seek emergency care for a sudden, extremely severe headache, new weakness or numbness, confusion, fainting, trouble speaking, a seizure, severe vision change, stiff neck with fever, repeated vomiting, or a headache after a significant head injury. Seek prompt medical assessment if the pain is steadily worsening, keeps returning, comes with a high fever or unusual rash, or is unlike your previous headaches. In the UAE, use local emergency services if symptoms are severe or rapidly developing.

Could the changing location fit migraine, muscle tension, sinus symptoms, dehydration, or another cause? Which warning symptoms should prompt urgent review? Is my current medicine appropriate, and how often can I use it? Should my blood pressure, vision, neurological function, or other tests be checked?
