Headache with a runny nose: what it may mean

Headache with a runny nose can occur with allergy, a cold, influenza, COVID-19, or sinus inflammation, so other symptoms matter. The combination does not identify one diagnosis by itself.

Clear watery discharge, sneezing, itchy eyes, or exposure to dust or animals can fit Allergic Rhinitis, House Dust Mite Allergy, or Pet Allergy. A cold or Influenza may add sore throat, cough, tiredness, or fever. COVID-19 can also cause respiratory symptoms and headache. Facial pressure, reduced smell, thick mucus, or pain that worsens when bending may occur with Sinusitis.

The pattern, onset, fever, exposure history, and duration help a clinician decide what is most likely. A runny nose itself is usually not dangerous, but breathing difficulty or severe systemic symptoms need prompt attention.
