Headache persisting for 3 days: what to know

A headache lasting 3 days deserves attention, especially if it is new, worsening, or accompanied by other symptoms. Rest, fluids, regular food, and a calm, dim environment may help while you arrange appropriate advice.

Headache can occur with tension in the scalp, neck, or jaw, migraine, poor sleep, missed meals, dehydration, heat exposure, or a viral illness. A blocked or inflamed nose may contribute through facial pressure. Allergic Rhinitis and Chronic Sinusitis are possible contributors when nasal symptoms are prominent; Common Cold and COVID-19 can also include headache.

The duration alone cannot identify the cause. Note where the pain is, whether it throbs or feels tight, what started it, and any nausea, light sensitivity, fever, neck stiffness, weakness, vision change, or recent injury.

Avoid repeatedly adding doses when pain is not improving; arrange a clinician review instead.

Seek emergency care for a sudden explosive headache, new weakness or numbness, trouble speaking, fainting, confusion, seizure, severe vision change, stiff neck with fever, repeated vomiting, or headache after a significant head injury. Get same-day medical advice if the headache is steadily worsening, unlike previous headaches, or occurs with fever, rash, pregnancy-related concerns, or very high blood pressure symptoms.
