Headache over the right eye: what to know

Migraine often affects one side and may bring nausea, light or sound sensitivity, or visual changes. Pressure from nasal inflammation can sit around the brow and may accompany congestion, sneezing, facial tenderness or a recent cold. Allergic rhinitis and chronic sinusitis are possible contributors, but the pain location does not establish either diagnosis. Reading, driving, bright screens, dry air or an uncorrected vision problem can strain the muscles around the eyes. Dehydration, overheating, skipped meals and poor sleep can also contribute. Very intense attacks around one eye with tearing or nasal blockage require assessment because they may represent a different primary headache pattern.

Stop strenuous activity and rest away from glare and noise. Drink fluids gradually, cool down after heat exposure, and eat a meal or snack if you have missed one. Try a cool cloth over the brow and take screen breaks. Follow the instructions for any usual pain medicine, checking first with a pharmacist if you have a long-term condition, take other medicines, or have pregnancy concerns. Write down timing, severity, food, sleep, heat, screen exposure, congestion, nausea and changes in sight. This record helps a clinician distinguish triggers from warning features.

Get emergency help for a sudden, maximal headache or pain with weakness, confusion, fainting, seizure, speech trouble, or fever with a stiff neck. Seek urgent assessment for a red or swollen eye, severe eye pain, new double vision, or loss of sight. Arrange a medical appointment if right-sided headaches recur, change character, worsen over time, or continue to disrupt sleep and daily tasks.
