A pulsing pain with nausea, light sensitivity, or a need to rest quietly can occur with migraine. An aching or tight feeling after stress, poor sleep, jaw clenching, or neck strain may reflect tension. Record whether the pain follows heat exposure, heavy sweating, vomiting, diarrhoea, or low fluid intake. Dehydration and heat exhaustion can cause headache with thirst, dizziness, weakness, or cramps. Generalised anxiety disorder may coexist with tension, but a new severe headache still deserves its own assessment.

Rest away from glare and noise, cool down if you have been in heat, and sip fluids. Eat regularly, loosen tight hairstyles, relax the jaw, and use gentle neck movement if that feels comfortable. Write down the start time, duration, intensity, triggers, and other symptoms.

Follow the label for any suitable non-prescription pain medicine and ask a pharmacist about interactions or medical conditions. Make a clinical appointment if this is a new recurring pattern, limits normal activity, or is becoming more frequent.

Seek emergency care for a thunderclap-like sudden headache, weakness or numbness, difficulty speaking, confusion, fainting, seizure, new visual loss, or headache after a head injury. A stiff neck with fever, repeated vomiting, or severe drowsiness also needs urgent evaluation.

Obtain same-day advice for worsening headache with fever, rash, marked light sensitivity, or signs of significant dehydration. Do not wait for self-care to work when neurological or visual symptoms appear.
