Headache on crown of head: what it can mean

Pain at the top of the head does not identify one particular illness. A tight, pressing feeling may occur with neck or scalp muscle tension, long screen use, poor sleep, stress, or jaw clenching. Throbbing pain with nausea or sensitivity to light or sound can fit a migraine pattern. Fever, blocked or runny nose, cough, or body aches may accompany a viral illness such as the Common Cold or COVID-19. Dizziness, dark urine, thirst, or unusual tiredness can point toward Dehydration. Heat exposure with weakness, sweating, or light-headedness may occur with Heat Exhaustion.

Rest somewhere cool and quiet, drink fluids gradually, and eat if you have missed a meal. Reduce bright light and screen time, and try gentle neck and shoulder movement if the pain feels tight. Record when it began, its intensity, triggers, associated symptoms, and any medicine taken. Use only an over-the-counter pain medicine that is suitable for you and follow its label; a pharmacist can check for interactions or reasons to avoid it. Arrange a medical review if headaches keep returning, change pattern, interfere with daily activities, or need frequent pain medicine.

Seek emergency help for a sudden severe headache, new weakness or numbness, trouble speaking, fainting, confusion, a seizure, vision loss, a stiff neck with fever, or a headache after a significant head injury. Seek prompt medical advice for a new headache with persistent vomiting, high fever, pregnancy, or a weakened immune system. Do not drive yourself if you feel confused, faint, or have new neurological symptoms.
