Headache with noise sensitivity: what should you know?

Short answer
Headache with noise sensitivity often reflects increased sensory sensitivity, but migraine, illness, dehydration, stress and other causes should be considered from the full pattern.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Helpful record
- Note sound triggers, headache quality, nausea, light sensitivity and timing.
- Support
- Quiet, dim surroundings, fluids, food and rest may reduce the burden.
Why sound may feel unusually harsh
During some headaches, ordinary sounds can feel painful or overwhelming, especially when pain is throbbing or accompanied by nausea or light sensitivity. Poor sleep, stress, anxiety, skipped meals and loud environments can lower tolerance for sound. Fever, cough, body aches or recent exposure may accompany COVID-19 or a Common Cold. Nasal symptoms may occur with Allergic Rhinitis or Chronic Sinusitis, while thirst and dizziness can accompany Dehydration. Noise sensitivity is a symptom, not a diagnosis, and its timing helps distinguish a recurring headache pattern from an acute illness.
Reducing discomfort
Rest in a dim, quiet room and reduce phone and television volume. Use hearing protection briefly in genuinely loud settings, but avoid wearing earplugs continuously because this can make everyday sounds feel more intrusive for some people. Drink fluids, eat if you have missed a meal and use a cool compress. Keep a diary of sound triggers, sleep, food, stress, medicines and associated symptoms. Follow label directions for any pain medicine and ask a pharmacist about suitability.
Urgent and routine review
Seek urgent help for a sudden severe headache, confusion, fainting, seizure, new weakness or numbness, stiff neck with fever, repeated vomiting or new vision loss. Get prompt advice if headache follows a head injury, occurs with a high fever, or noise sensitivity is sudden and intense. Arrange a routine appointment when attacks recur, become more frequent, affect work or sleep, or change from your usual pattern.
What to ask
Ask whether the symptoms fit migraine or another headache type, how to identify triggers, and which preventive or acute treatments are appropriate for your medical history.
