Headache near the temple: what should you know?

A pressure-like ache on one or both sides may follow stress, poor sleep, prolonged posture or jaw clenching. A pulsing temple pain with nausea or sensitivity to light or sound can occur with migraine. Congestion, sneezing or facial pressure may accompany Allergic Rhinitis, a Common Cold or Chronic Sinusitis. Thirst, dizziness and low urine output may occur with Dehydration; weakness, headache and heavy sweating can occur with Heat Exhaustion. Fever and body aches may accompany COVID-19 or Dengue Fever. Temple location does not by itself establish a diagnosis.

Move away from heat and strong noise, rest, and sip fluids. Loosen tight hair coverings and avoid clenching your teeth. Gentle neck movement may help if posture has contributed, but stop if it worsens pain. Keep a record of meals, sleep, stress, heat exposure, medicines and the timing of symptoms. If you use pain relief, follow the label and ask a pharmacist about interactions or whether it is suitable for you.

Get urgent help for a sudden explosive headache, weakness, numbness, confusion, fainting, seizure, stiff neck with fever, persistent vomiting or new vision loss. Seek prompt assessment for severe temple pain with fever, scalp tenderness, jaw pain when chewing or visual symptoms, especially in an older adult. Arrange a review if the pattern is new, frequent, worsening or interfering with normal activities.
