Headache in the back left of the head

Pain in this area can be referred from tight muscles at the base of the skull, upper neck or shoulders, especially after prolonged screen use or an awkward sleeping position. Migraine can also affect one side and may bring nausea or sensitivity to light and sound. A cold, sinus inflammation, feverish illness, dehydration or heat exposure may add a more general headache. The location alone cannot identify the cause.

Notice whether the pain is pressure, throbbing, stabbing or burning; whether neck movement changes it; and whether it began suddenly or gradually. Record triggers, sleep, fluids, meals, medicines and associated symptoms.

Rest in a cool, quiet room, drink fluids regularly and eat if you have missed a meal. Gentle neck movement and a warm or cool compress may help when muscles feel tight. Reduce glare and take screen breaks. Use an over-the-counter pain medicine only if it is suitable for you and follow its label; ask a pharmacist if you have other conditions or take regular medicines. Avoid repeatedly taking painkillers without medical advice, because frequent use can perpetuate headaches.

Seek emergency care for a sudden, severe headache, or headache with weakness, numbness, confusion, fainting, a seizure, trouble speaking, vision loss, a stiff neck with fever, or repeated vomiting. Get prompt assessment after a head injury, or if the pain is new and worsening. Arrange a clinician review when headaches keep returning, change pattern, interfere with daily life, or occur with fever or persistent neck pain.
