Headache and face swelling symptoms: what to know

Swelling around the eyes, cheeks, lips, or one side of the face may occur with nasal or sinus inflammation, an allergic reaction, dental or skin infection, or fluid changes. Allergic rhinitis can cause congestion and pressure around the face; chronic sinusitis may cause persistent facial pressure. A headache alone cannot identify the cause.

A sudden swollen face with hives, wheezing, throat tightness, faintness, or swelling of the tongue can signal a serious allergic reaction. Fever, warmth, redness, severe tooth pain, or swelling that is rapidly worsening may point to infection and needs prompt medical assessment.

Note when the swelling began, whether it is on one side, and whether it follows a new food, medicine, cosmetic, insect bite, or dental problem. Rest in a cool place, drink fluids if you can, and use a cool compress. Avoid a suspected trigger and do not press or massage a painful swollen area.

A pharmacist or clinician can help you choose a suitable pain reliever after checking allergies, pregnancy, kidney or liver problems, stomach ulcers, and other medicines. Do not exceed the label directions.

Call emergency services immediately for breathing difficulty, throat or tongue swelling, confusion, collapse, a new weakness, trouble speaking, or a sudden severe headache. Seek same-day care for fever with facial swelling, eye pain or vision change, severe one-sided swelling, or swelling that is spreading. Arrange a clinical review if the headache or swelling keeps returning or does not settle.
