Short answer

A headache that arrives every afternoon may follow accumulated screen strain, missed food, dehydration, heat, stress, congestion or migraine, and a diary can reveal useful triggers.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why afternoons can bring pain

By afternoon, time spent reading or looking at a screen may leave the eyes, jaw, neck and shoulders tense. A long gap between meals, insufficient fluids, hot weather, strong smells or a change in caffeine can also contribute. A tight band-like ache often differs from migraine, which may throb and come with nausea or sensitivity to light and sound. Stuffy nose, sneezing or facial pressure may occur with Allergic Rhinitis or Chronic Sinusitis. Headache timing is a clue, not a diagnosis.

Steps to try

Have water available through the day and avoid regularly skipping lunch. Take brief visual breaks, adjust screen brightness and check whether your head is leaning forward. Relax your shoulders and jaw, move gently, and seek a cooler, quieter space if heat or noise worsens symptoms. Keep a diary of meals, drinks, screens, sleep, caffeine, pain quality and associated symptoms. Ask a pharmacist or clinician about a safe pain-relief option rather than taking repeated doses without guidance.

When to seek care

Get urgent help for a sudden extreme headache, weakness, numbness, confusion, difficulty speaking, fainting, new vision loss, fever with a stiff neck, repeated vomiting or pain after injury. Arrange an appointment when afternoon headaches continue, disrupt work or study, require frequent medicine, or become different from your usual pattern. Headache with fever, cough or loss of smell may occur with COVID-19 or another infection; severe thirst, weakness or heat exposure may suggest Dehydration or Heat Exhaustion and should be assessed.

Questions for your doctor

What headache pattern does this resemble? Could my work posture, eyesight, meals, fluids or caffeine be contributing? Should I be checked for migraine, sinus symptoms or another cause? What treatment plan is safe if the headaches keep returning?

Questions people ask

Can screen use cause an afternoon headache?

Long periods of close visual work and a tense neck or jaw can contribute, particularly when breaks and hydration are overlooked.

Should I ignore a headache that comes every afternoon?

No. Recurring headaches deserve review if they persist, worsen, affect routine or need frequent pain medicine.
