Headache During Sex: What You Should Know

Some headaches linked to sexual activity are related to exertion, tightening of the neck and jaw, or changes in breathing and blood pressure. A dull ache that increases as activity becomes more intense differs from a thunderclap headache that reaches maximum intensity within moments.

The symptom can also occur alongside an underlying headache disorder or an illness such as dehydration. Dehydration can make headaches easier to trigger, while nasal congestion from Allergic Rhinitis or Chronic Sinusitis may add facial pressure. These associated conditions do not explain away a sudden, unusually intense pain.

Stop sexual activity, rest in a quiet place, and note when the pain began, how quickly it peaked, where it is located, and whether it came with vomiting, faintness, weakness, or vision change. Avoid restarting activity until the episode has settled and its pattern is clear.

Drink fluids if you may have been sweating or drinking too little. Arrange a medical review before further sexual activity if this is your first episode, if it keeps returning, or if the pain is different from your usual headaches. A clinician can decide whether examination or testing is needed.

Seek emergency care for a sudden explosive headache, loss of consciousness, confusion, seizure, one-sided weakness, trouble speaking, severe neck stiffness, repeated vomiting, or a new vision problem. Seek prompt medical advice for a persistent headache, fever, or pain that repeatedly follows sexual activity.

Ask whether the speed of onset changes the urgency, whether your medicines or blood pressure could contribute, and when it is reasonable to resume sexual activity. Take a brief record of triggers, duration, severity, and accompanying symptoms.
