Headache Between the Eyes: Possible Causes

Pain in this spot can feel like pressure behind the nose or around the eye sockets. A blocked or irritated nose may point toward allergic rhinitis, chronic sinusitis, or a common cold, particularly when sneezing, discharge, reduced smell, or facial pressure is present. Eye fatigue is more likely after close work or screens and may occur with blurred focus or dry eyes. Tension can spread from the forehead, scalp, neck, or jaw. Fever, marked tiredness, or exposure to heat changes the possibilities, but the symptom pattern cannot confirm a particular condition.

Pause close work regularly and let your eyes focus at a distance. Sit in a cool, dim room, sip fluids, and avoid alcohol while you feel unwell. A warm or cool compress can be tried around the forehead, without pressing on the eyes. If your nose is blocked, saline spray or a rinse may provide comfort; follow the product directions. Note whether bending forward, screens, dust, heat, or missed meals affect the pain. Check with a pharmacist before using an over-the-counter pain reliever if you have medical conditions or take other medicines.

Get urgent help if eye pain is severe, vision suddenly changes or is lost, the eye becomes swollen or very red, or the headache starts abruptly and intensely. Emergency assessment is also appropriate with confusion, fainting, weakness, a seizure, stiff neck with fever, or vomiting that prevents fluids. Seek a routine appointment for persistent, recurrent, or progressively worsening headaches.
