Headache and constant thirst: what should you know?

Thirst and headache may occur when you have not taken in enough fluid, have been sweating, are vomiting, or are recovering from fever. Dry mouth, dark urine, dizziness, weakness, or passing urine less often support dehydration. Persistent thirst despite drinking can also occur with high blood glucose, medicines, or a condition affecting fluid balance, so do not assume the headache explains the thirst.

Sip water regularly and pause strenuous activity in a cool place, especially after heat or sweating. If vomiting or diarrhoea is present, ask a pharmacist about an oral rehydration drink. Note how much you drink, how often you urinate, and whether you have dry mouth, blurred vision, unusual hunger, or weight change. Do not start someone else’s glucose-lowering medicine.

Get urgent help for confusion, fainting, severe weakness, inability to keep fluids down, very little urine, rapid breathing, or a sudden severe headache. Arrange a medical appointment when thirst is persistent, repeatedly wakes you, or comes with frequent urination, blurred vision, weight change, or recurrent headaches.

Ask whether you need blood glucose, kidney, or electrolyte checks and whether any medicine could be increasing thirst. Tell the clinician about heat exposure, fluid losses, diet changes, and the timing of your headaches.
