Headache and sensitivity to light

Short answer
Headache with sensitivity to light can occur with migraine, illness, dehydration, or eye strain, but sudden or severe symptoms need urgent assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What it can mean
Light sensitivity, also called photophobia, may accompany a throbbing or pressure-like headache. Migraine can bring nausea, visual changes, or a need to rest in a dark, quiet room. A viral illness, sinus symptoms, heat exposure, or not drinking enough can also make head pain and light discomfort occur together. Eye strain from prolonged screen use may add aching around the eyes. The symptom pattern, onset, triggers, and other features matter more than the light sensitivity alone.
What you can do now
Move to a calm room with gentle lighting, pause screen use, drink fluids if you can, and rest. Avoid driving while vision is uncomfortable or the headache affects concentration. Note when the pain began, whether it is one-sided, and any nausea, fever, rash, eye pain, weakness, or visual loss. A clinician can use this history to decide whether examination, eye assessment, or other care is appropriate.
When to seek care
Get emergency help for a sudden severe headache, new weakness or numbness, confusion, fainting, trouble speaking, a seizure, a stiff neck with fever, or repeated vomiting. Seek prompt medical care for a new headache after a head injury, severe eye pain, or ongoing visual loss. Arrange a medical review when episodes recur, steadily worsen, or interfere with normal activities.
Questions for your doctor
Could this pattern fit migraine or another cause? Do my medicines, vision, sleep, hydration, or screen habits contribute? What warning signs should change my plan?

Questions people ask
Should I stay in complete darkness?
A dim, comfortable room may help; complete darkness is not required if gentle light feels tolerable.
When is light sensitivity urgent?
Urgent assessment is needed when it begins suddenly with a severe headache, neurological changes, fever with neck stiffness, or major vision problems.
