Headache and restless legs: what to know

Short answer
Headache and restless legs may be linked by poor sleep, stress, or an underlying health problem, but each symptom needs its own careful assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Restless legs pattern
- An urge to move that worsens at rest and eases with movement.
- Before iron
- Check for iron deficiency with a clinician rather than self-treating.
How the symptoms may connect
Restless legs involve an urge to move the legs, often with crawling, pulling, or uncomfortable sensations that worsen during rest and ease with movement. Symptoms can delay sleep or cause repeated waking; that sleep loss may then contribute to tension-type headache or make migraine easier to trigger. Iron deficiency anaemia is one possible contributor. Chronic kidney disease and peripheral neuropathy can also be relevant, while some medicines may worsen the urge to move.
Having both symptoms does not point to one diagnosis. A clinician will ask when each symptom began, whether movement helps, and whether the headache has a separate pattern such as light sensitivity, nausea, or neck tension.
Steps that may help
Keep a regular sleep and wake time, use gentle leg stretching or walking when symptoms start, and try a warm bath or massage before bed. Limit caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol near bedtime, and keep a record of sleep, leg sensations, headache timing, and medicines. Do not start iron supplements based only on symptoms; iron treatment is appropriate when deficiency is confirmed or specifically advised. A clinician can review blood tests and medicines before recommending treatment.
When to seek care
Arrange a medical appointment if restless legs regularly disturb sleep, the sensations spread, or headaches become frequent or difficult to control. Seek urgent help for a sudden severe headache, weakness, confusion, fainting, seizure, fever with a stiff neck, or severe vomiting. One swollen, hot, painful leg or sudden breathlessness is also an emergency and may not be restless legs.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether iron studies, a blood count, kidney assessment, or a nerve examination is appropriate. Discuss whether any current medicine could worsen symptoms, whether iron supplementation is suitable, and which headache plan protects your sleep and general health.
