Headache and nosebleed on the left side

Most nosebleeds start from small vessels near the front of one nostril. Dryness, rubbing, nose picking, forceful blowing, allergic rhinitis, a common cold, or sinusitis can affect one side more than the other. Congestion may cause pressure in the forehead, cheeks, or around the eye, while tension or dehydration can cause a separate headache. The left-sided location alone cannot identify the underlying condition.

Sit upright and lean forward. Pinch the soft part of the nose, including the bleeding side, without releasing pressure to check it repeatedly. Afterward, avoid nose blowing, heavy exertion, hot drinks, and picking for a while. Saline nasal moisture may help dryness, but ask a pharmacist before using a medicated spray, especially if you have hypertension or take regular medicines.

Seek emergency care for a sudden severe headache, fainting, confusion, weakness, vision loss, stiff neck, breathing difficulty, or bleeding after a significant injury. Arrange prompt assessment if blood flow is heavy, pressure does not stop it, the same nostril bleeds repeatedly, or you have fever and worsening facial pain. Recurrent one-sided blockage, crusting, or discharge should also be examined.

Tell your doctor whether the pain and bleeding always occur on the left, how often they happen, and whether congestion, facial tenderness, fever, trauma, or nose sprays are involved. Ask whether your blood pressure or nasal lining should be checked.
