Headache and hiccups: what should you know?

Hiccups are repeated involuntary contractions of the diaphragm. They may follow eating quickly, fizzy drinks, alcohol, reflux, or irritation in the chest or abdomen. A headache can accompany dehydration, a viral illness, heat exposure, poor sleep, or migraine. The combination does not identify one diagnosis by itself. Fever, cough, vomiting, diarrhoea, thirst, dark urine, or recent time outdoors in heat can add useful context. Hiccups that continue can interfere with sleep, eating, and fluid intake, which may intensify a headache.

Move to a cool, quiet place and sip water or an oral rehydration drink if you can swallow normally. Rest, reduce bright light, and avoid alcohol, large meals, and carbonated drinks while symptoms settle. Eat slowly when nausea has eased. Keep a note of when the headache began, how long hiccups last, recent heat exposure, medicines, and other symptoms. Do not drive if pain, weakness, or lightheadedness affects you.

Seek emergency help for a sudden severe headache, confusion, fainting, a seizure, new weakness or numbness, trouble speaking, breathing difficulty, repeated vomiting, or a stiff neck with fever. Arrange prompt medical advice if hiccups persist, prevent sleep or drinking, or the headache keeps returning or is worsening. Fever with a severe headache after travel or mosquito exposure also deserves urgent assessment.
