Headache and chills without fever: what to know

Chills can feel like shivering or internal cold even when a thermometer is normal. They may accompany the early phase of a viral infection, a cold environment, poor sleep, anxiety, or low fluid intake. A headache can arise alongside these changes rather than pointing to one specific condition. Temperature readings can vary with the device, timing, and recent activity.

Check for developing sore throat, cough, blocked nose, body aches, vomiting, diarrhoea, urinary symptoms, rash, or increasing temperature. Consider recent heat exposure, travel, sick contacts, and any new medicine.

Rest, keep comfortably warm, drink fluids regularly, and eat lightly if your stomach allows. Measure your temperature again if you feel worse. Wash hands and limit close contact if an infection seems possible. Do not combine cold or pain products without checking their ingredients, because the same medicine may appear in more than one product.

Get urgent help for confusion, fainting, breathing difficulty, a stiff neck, a rapidly worsening headache, new weakness, a seizure, a purple or spreading rash, or inability to keep fluids down. Contact a clinician if chills recur, symptoms progress, a fever develops, or you have an immune problem or significant long-term condition.
