Headache after smoking

Short answer
Headache after smoking may reflect nicotine effects, smoke exposure, dehydration, or another problem requiring medical assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- First step
- Stop smoking and move into fresh air.
- Useful record
- Note the product, amount, setting, timing, and other symptoms.
Why it can happen
Nicotine can temporarily change blood vessel tone and stimulate the nervous system; smoke can also irritate the airways and expose you to carbon monoxide. A headache may be more likely in a poorly ventilated place, after several cigarettes, or when smoking replaces food and fluids. Withdrawal between cigarettes can cause head pain too, so the timing alone cannot identify one cause.
Headache with cough, wheeze, chest discomfort, dizziness, nausea, or unusual sleepiness after indoor smoke exposure needs attention. A viral illness, nasal inflammation, or anxiety can coexist; relevant information is available for Common Cold, Allergic Rhinitis, and Generalised Anxiety Disorder.
What to do next
Stop smoking and move to fresh air. Sip water, eat if you have missed a meal, and rest away from smoke. Do not smoke to test whether the headache changes. If you want to quit, a clinician or pharmacist can help choose support that fits your nicotine use and medicines. Note the product, amount, setting, time to onset, and any dizziness, nausea, or breathing symptoms.
When to seek care
Get emergency help for sudden severe head pain, confusion, fainting, weakness, trouble speaking, seizure, chest pain, severe breathlessness, or persistent vomiting. Seek urgent advice after possible heavy smoke exposure when headache is accompanied by dizziness, weakness, or unusual drowsiness. Book a medical review if symptoms recur after smoking, continue despite stopping, or are becoming more frequent. Dehydration and Heat Exhaustion can also cause headache and may need treatment.
Questions for your doctor
Could nicotine, smoke exposure, withdrawal, or one of my medicines explain this pattern? What help is available for stopping, and which symptoms would mean I need urgent care?

Questions people ask
Does a headache after smoking prove smoke is the only cause?
No. The timing is a clue, but dehydration, withdrawal, illness, and other factors can overlap.
Should I continue smoking to see if the pain settles?
No. Stop, get fresh air, and seek help if severe or unusual symptoms occur.
